How to Split a PDF into Smaller Files (Free & Online)
Got one big PDF and need separate files for different portals or emails? Here’s how to split a PDF into smaller parts using free browser tools in PDFImageLab.
When do you need to split a PDF?
Splitting a PDF is useful when:
- A government or college portal asks you to upload documents as separate PDFs.
- Your original file has many sections (ID proof, marksheets, bills, etc.).
- The PDF is too large for email and you want to send it in parts.
Method 1 — Split by page range (simple two–step trick)
PDFImageLab doesn’t use a separate “Split” button. Instead, you can combine Delete pages and Merge PDF to create clean smaller files:
- Open the original PDF in Delete pages.
- Decide which pages you want in the first smaller PDF (for example: pages 1–4).
- Delete all other pages (5–, etc.) so only 1–4 remain.
- Download this trimmed PDF and rename it, e.g., Document-Part-1.pdf.
- Repeat the same process for pages 5–8, 9–12, and so on, each time starting from the original file.
In the end, you’ll have multiple smaller PDFs, each containing only the pages you need.
Method 2 — Split and then re-combine what you need
Sometimes you only need a few sections from a big document. You can trim first, then combine:
- Use Delete pages to remove the pages you don’t need and download the reduced file.
- Repeat for other sections you want separately.
- Later, if you want a single combined PDF again, open Merge PDF and upload those smaller parts.
- Arrange them in the right order and merge into a fresh PDF.
Tips for cleaner, smaller parts
- Use Crop PDF to remove extra borders before splitting.
- Use Compress PDF after splitting if file size is still high.
- Give each part a clear name like Application-Form.pdf, ID-Proof.pdf, Marksheets.pdf.
